A practical starting point for investigating unusual experiences safely and thoughtfully. These guidelines offer a practical approach to investigating unusual experiences.
Obey local laws, never trespass or vandalize, and do not enter unsafe buildings. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. No investigation is worth getting hurt.
You do not need expensive equipment. A phone or digital camera and a voice recorder are enough to begin documenting an investigation. Specialized equipment can be added later.
A location does not need a violent history to be interesting. Start somewhere you can enter legally and safely, preferably with permission and some documented history.
Paranormal investigating does not have to happen in darkness. Daylight and evening visits can make it easier to document the environment and identify ordinary explanations.
Many investigations produce nothing unusual. An uneventful visit is still useful if it was carefully documented.
Dark or unfamiliar places can be startling. Moving carefully and staying aware of your surroundings reduces the risk of falls, collisions and other ordinary accidents.
Reflections, insects, dust, camera motion, building noises, electrical sources and pareidolia can all create surprising results. Try to rule these out before calling something unexplained.
Record the location, date, time, weather, people present and nearby sources of light, sound or electrical interference. Good notes make later review much more useful.
Keep original files whenever possible. Compare photographs, video and audio with your notes, and avoid enhancing material so heavily that processing creates the feature you are trying to interpret.
These tips are personal opinions rather than established scientific facts. Paranormal investigation is not a substitute for scientific testing, professional building inspection, emergency services or other qualified expertise.
Never enter a location without permission, and never sacrifice personal safety for a photograph, recording or experience.
